I almost feel guilty, life shouldn’t be this good. I was fortunate to go to Wakatobi not just once this year, but twice!
Due to the enthusiastic response to the my November trip, which quickly sold out, I added a second departure that took place over Christmas and New Year’s.
There is so much to love about Wakatobi. The warmest staff anywhere welcomed us by our first names within the first day, the healthy gourmet meals kept our stomachs smiling, and don’t get me started on the homemade coconut sorbet. The bungalows had everything we could think of including fish ID books. But the raison d’etre of course are the amazing reefs.
Walk down the stairs at the jetty, put your face in the water and hello underwater wonderland. There is so much to see in every direction you could get whiplash. Coral of every color and shape and such a joyous assortment of fish life. Rabbit fish, huge schools red tooth triggerfish, angelfish, butterfly fish, parrot fish, the outlandish clown triggerfish, anthias and chromis galore and the occasional blue spotted ray darting by. And then there are the cryptic fellows, crocodile fish, scorpion fish, camouflage octopus watching your every move.
Besides exploring the totally awesome house reef we went on sensational snorkel outings by boat. We saw more cuttlefish during our snorkel sessions than I’ve ever seen before. I simply lost count. Certainly a highlight for me was seeing my first white pygmy seahorse.
What made these trips exceptional was sharing the experience with old and new friends. Everyone was so compatible, enthusiastic and an absolute joy to spend time with in and out of the water.
Looking forward to my next return to Wakatobi November 2020!
Cheers!
