Banda Sea-Raja Ampat Snorkel Expedition

October 25, 2016 - November 5, 2016

Please join me on a very special journey. On this unique itinerary we’ll experience 3 different areas: Ambon, the Banda Sea and Raja Ampat. The Biodiversity will be stunning.

On October 25th we will begin our journey in Ambon. From the comfort of our live-aboard we’ll explore the Banda Islands and travel up through beautiful shallow reefs and the mind-blowing colorful coral of Raja Ampat.

The volcanic Banda islands are known as the Spice Islands and they are steeped in fascinating history. Originally the only source for exotic nutmeg and cloves this area was at the center of every traders map and eventually fell under Dutch control during the 16th century.

The reef system of the Banda islands is remote and unspoiled. The isolated location of these islands provides a vibrant, natural and healthy reef system.
We will be traveling through the heart of the famed “Coral Triangle” from the Banda Islands to Raja Ampat.  Over 1,500 fish species and 500 coral species inhabit this magical area. 75% of all Coral species that exist in the world are located here.

The astonishing variety of marine life is staggering. The diversity of marine habitats translates to wildly different snorkeling experiences.

In the Banda Sea we have the possibility of seeing unusual species like the mimic octopus, mandarin fish, frog fish and seahorses. The area also features an ancient lava flow that now flourishes with huge table coral and an abundance of marine life.

As we travel north through Raja Ampat we may swim through large schools of fusiliers, surgeons, bannerfish, triggerfish and squadrons of jacks and barracuda. Other area highlights may include  lionfish, wobbegongs, turtles and majestic mantas.  Throughout our journey we will be delighted by huge seafans, sponges, and beautiful coral gardens.

Our day to day itinerary will be dependent on wind and sea conditions to ensure we are in the best place at the best time. The rhythm of a typical day will start with watching the sunrise. Early morning coffee and light breakfast is available before we jump in for our first snorkel adventure, a full breakfast will follow. Our vessel will reposition for another afternoon exploration while we lunch. The afternoon may feature another exploration under the sea and perhaps a hike. Our 11 days will be full of fantastic snorkeling, village visits and relaxing time on board with other like-minded adventurers.

November 5th we will disembark in Sorong.

I’ve been in the Raja Ampat region many times and I’m very, very excited to return again especially to travel on the highly regarded Pindito. The Pindito is the only live-aboard dive boat operating in Raja Ampat with over 20 years of experience. They have an excellent crew and chef. The Pindito holds up to 16 people in 8 cabins with air-conditioning and en-suite bathrooms.

Logistics:
Plan to arrive in Indonesia on Oct 24th at the very latest. Jakarta (CGK) airport is the most convenient city to begin this voyage. Bali (DPS) is another option and if you plan to spend time in Bali it would make sense to start there.

I’ll make the flight arrangements for the group to fly from Bali or Jakarta to Ambon on Oct. 25th.
From Bali  to Ambon the Garuda flight leaves at 6:05am and arrives 1:55pm
From Jakarta to Ambon the Garuda flight leaves at 8:15am and arrives  1:55pm

The voyage ends in Sorong on Nov. 5th.

I’ll make the flight arrangements to back to Jakarta or Bali.
From Sorong to Bali the Garuda flight leaves at 11:50am and arrives 6:10pm
From Sorong to Jakarta the Garuda flight leaves at 12:20pm and arrives 4:35pm
Above flight times subject to change.
Don’t plan to fly onward until Nov. 6th at the earliest. Schedules change often and delays are not uncommon.

Travel Extensions:
This expedition can easily be combined with my Wakatobi snorkel adventure Oct 16-24th.
Wakatobi Resort is located in SE Sulawesi and features an amazing house reef.

As long as you are in Indonesia, consider exploring magical Bali or even extending your time in Raja Ampat in a small eco-resort.
I can help with all arrangements including flights, insurance and extensions.

I hope you will be able to join me in this exceptional journey! For further information and an application please contact me!

In the spirit of adventure!
