Sea Lions, Mobulas and Whale Sharks, Baja July 22-August 1, 2027

July 22, 2027 - August 1, 2027

In 2025 a group of enthusiastic travelers returned from a remarkable voyage that covered 700 miles down the entire length of the Sea of Cortez.  We experienced uninterrupted, nonstop beauty in and out of the water.
We all loved the experience so much, I thought, Wow! We have to do this again! And so, I present to you…
“Explorations of the Sea of Cortez 2027”!

July 22, 2027 Our expedition begins in Loreto. Loreto is a charming, seaside town. This colonial city is officially designated as a Pueblos Magicos or Magical Village. Loreto is home to ancient cave paintings, two 17th century mission churches. You may choose to arrive a few days early to enjoy the art, architecture and excellent restaurants of the area.

During our unique 11-day “Explore Baja” itinerary we’ll cover over 450 miles of stunning landscapes. So much of Baja is pristine and undeveloped.  Start your morning on the top deck and take in the drama of the Sea of Cortez.  Towering cardon cacti reach upward to 60 feet tall, plants bloom unexpectantly, desert cliffs plunge straight into brilliant blue water and empty beaches stretch for miles. The stark beauty of the desert feels like you are at the edge of world.
While on deck, scan the horizon for dolphins and whales.  Overhead keep a look out for frigate birds, herons and blue and brown-footed bobbies.

The drama continues in the water. Snorkel highlights may include the endemic Cortez angelfish, schools of triggerfish, butterfly fish, octopus, scorpionfish, whale sharks and variety of rays including mobulas!

Personally, I can’t get enough of the playful sea lions. It’s so much fun to interact with them, especially the young pups who twist and twirl around in acrobatic antics all around you!
As you travel south to north you’ll experience a range of underwater environments. The Southern part of the Sea of Cortez has lush coral and large congregations of fish, as you travel north the terrain becomes rockier, this is where you can see underwater treasures like nudibranchs, scorpionfish galore and octopus.

Bahia de los Angeles is located approximately mid-way down the Baja California peninsula and this is where we’ll have an opportunity to swim with whale sharks!

We’ll also have time to enjoy desert hikes and beach walks.

August 1, 2027  The group will disembark the Quino del Mar in Puerto Penasco at 7:00am.
Rocky Point Transportation will meet and transfer us back to Phoenix airport in two 14-passenger vans. The approx. four-hour drive is through dramatic desert landscape. The driver will stop along the way for a restroom and stretch break. The international border crossing is at Lukeville/Sonoyta, about one hour after departing the marina.
We’ll be dropped at the Phoenix airport in time to fly out any time after 2pm on August 1st.

Our voyage will take place on the new Quino del Mar.
The Quino del Mar has an experienced and friendly crew, a wonderful chef who can cater to any special meal requests. We’ll be accompanied in the water with snorkel guides. I’m arranging to have a naturalist join our voyage. We’ll be treated to presentations about marine life and the environment.
