A month before departure, the trip was looking doubtful. Cuba experienced massive power outages, three hurricanes and an earthquake! I wondered what was coming next? Surprisingly, the group remained unwavering in their desire to go. And off we went! We were richly rewarded for our fortitude. It was a magical, musical, vibrant experience start to finish.
In Havana and Trinidad, we observed daily life as we meandered down cobbled streets, we danced the salsa, enjoyed music and dance performances, rode in convertible’s from the 1950’s, Throughout our 5 days of touring we soaked up a wealth of information about the history, culture, religion and art from our knowledgeable and fabulous guide David Garcia Martin.
We were presented with elaborate and delicious meal often serenaded by musicians. I lost count how many times we had lobster during our trip.
From Trinidad we traveled to Jucaro where we boarded the Avalon III and snorkeled in the Jardins de la Reina for 7 nights.
The coral has taken a hit from the high water temperatures that have affected the entire Caribbean, but the reefs are just as fishy as ever. The reefs are teeming with snappers, grunts and groupers. The hogfish, angelfish, sharks and rays were highlights.
Our group was extremely privileged to have Jardins de la Reina researchers, Fabian Amargos and Tamara Martin as our lecturers and guides.
The conditions are difficult but the resilience, vibrancy and warmth of the Cuban people deeply moves me. My heart goes out to the Cuban people and I look forward to a future return.
