Adventures at sea begin in Komodo and Sumbawa!
Komodo is located at the boundary between the southern Indian and northern Pacific oceans. Powerful tidal currents draw nutrient-rich Indian Ocean seawater to the northern reaches of the park. This confluence creates a remarkable variety of species to mix here. The end result is a stunning diversity of habitats and species in a relatively small area. Komodo National Park is home to more than 1,000 species of fish, 260 species of coral.
Komodo has it all! Beautiful soft coral reefs, exhilarating drift snorkels, spectacular hard coral reefs, fishy pinnacles and black sand muck snorkels. Komodo is home to a large population of manta rays, large schools of fish, turtles, reef sharks and a myriad of weird and wonderful fish and critters!
During this voyage you’ll have the opportunity to experience all the goodies Komodo has to offer including snorkeling, beach walks and of course the Komodo dragons! You’ll discover first-hand why Komodo National Park is one of the New 7 Seven Wonders of Nature.
Depending on prevailing conditions, the voyage will most likely begin in Komodo before heading Sumbawa. En route to Sumbawa you’ll have a chance to experience Gili Banta and Sangeang volcanic islands. Gili Banta is an ancient, partially submerged volcano where the Pacific and Indian oceans meet. This convergence brings in fish, big and small. Perfect for schooling fish, sharks, and amazing corals.
- Nudibranch
- Anemonefish
- sweepers
Sangeang is an active volcano, that last erupted in 2014. The volcano rises dramatically from the ocean and plumes of smoke are often seen. One of the snorkels is called “Hot Rocks” where there are bubbles streaming out of the sand.
It’s super fun to snorkel in this natural spa!
- Seahorse
The black sands are home to all sorts of incredible marine life including nudibranchs of all sorts and colors. Other regular sightings include ghost pipefish, orangutan crabs, frogfish, ribbon eels, mushroom coral pipefish maybe even a seahorse.
You may even be treated to an evening show of nature’s fireworks!
- Blue Ribbon Eel
- Reef Octopus
- giant frog fish
The adventures continue as the Coralia travels to Saleh Bay, Sumbawa for a chance to snorkel with whale sharks. The whale sharks of Sumbawa come to feed at the bagans (fishing platforms) here. This is a natural behavior the whale sharks have learnt that if they suck on the fishing nets the fishermen’s catch comes out of the holes! The fishermen believe these huge fish bring them good luck. They throw handfuls of fish to the whale sharks to keep them close to their bagan.
Whale sharks have been known to stay with snorkelers for hours at a time. Having close-up encounters as the whale sharks circle round and round is one of the most incredible experience you can have.
